Winning Post wasn't built in a vacuum by software engineers who have never set foot on a racetrack.
Our platform was born from over 50 years of pure, hands-on New Zealand horse racing experience—spanning a lifetime spent as a jockey, preparing thoroughbreds as a trainer, and managing the integrity of race days as a race day official.
We know exactly what a traditional form guide looks like, and more importantly, we know where it falls short.
Winning Post is the work of one person with 50 years in and around New Zealand racing.
Steve Baron began as an apprentice jockey in the 1970s, then trained thoroughbreds for around a decade, stabling at Long Bay Beach, Takanini, and Cambridge. He has owned horses with some of the country's most respected stables — Trevor and Stephen McKee, Colin Jillings and Richard Yuill, and Wayne Marshment — and his proudest day as a trainer came in 1997, when Regal Strike won the Ryder Stakes.
He later spent five years as an official Clerk of the Scales in the Central Districts — weighing riders and keeping the rules straight, the kind of role that teaches you racing is a game of fine margins.
Away from the track, Steve holds a Bachelor of Arts in Economics and Political Science from the University of Waikato, and an Honours degree in Political Science from Victoria University of Wellington. He also built two advertising businesses in Auckland from scratch over more than 20 years.
Winning Post began out of genuine curiosity: Steve wanted to know whether AI could actually pick winners, and he has always been fascinated by technology. What started as a personal experiment is now a model he puts to work — and holds to account.
Traditional punting relies on hours of manual spreadsheet tracking, subjective opinions, and endless guesswork.
We realised that the deep, intuitive knowledge gained from decades at the track could be scaled, optimised, and perfected using modern predictive analytics.
Winning Post combines elite racing intuition with a powerful machine learning engine.
Our system processes thousands of localised data points for every New Zealand meeting—including shifting track biases, sectional pace metrics, and subtle trainer patterns—filtering out the noise to deliver clear, high-probability selections.
We don't make unrealistic promises or hide behind vague percentages. We respect the sport and the punters who support it and our core foundation is absolute transparency.
Every single selection our model makes is permanently logged and audited in our historical track records, giving you a clear, honest look at our long-term performance.
We build tools for smart punters who want clarity, data-backed integrity, and an elite edge on New Zealand racing.
